OPI — GoldenEye

Happy Meowlloween, kittens! I hope you enjoyed reading about my Top Ten as much as I enjoyed writing about them! Now, back to business.

I've got another color from the OPI Skyfall James Bond Collection to share with you: GoldenEye*.

GoldenEye is a bright, flashy yellow gold. I would say it's less like 14k warm, classic gold and more like every kid's favorite Hanukkah candy, gelt.

The base of GoldenEye is a rosy yellow-orange. The glitter is unusual; to me this seems like more of a really dense flakie. The gold flakes appear irregular.

This color is not for the faint of heart. It's on the loud side for sure. It doesn't just say, "Look at me!" — it screams it. So be prepared for a lot of attention if you end up sporting GoldenEye.

GoldenEye was the perfect color to go with my Halloween costume because I needed something over-the-top and shiny. And definitely something GOLD. Why you ask? Because I was going to be a hamburger. Yes, a hamburger.

Yes! A GlamBurger! I bought some neon green tulle to serve as my "Lettuce Wrap," added some much needed American Cheese to the neckline and created some ginormous cheeseburgers for my... buns.

What did you guys dress up as for Halloween? And of course I want to know, did your nails play a starring role in your costume?

My Top Ten \ Number Seven: OPI — The World Is Not Enough

I wasn't kidding last week when I said that OPI The World Is Not Enough catapulted to the upper echelon of my Stash. I love this polish! So of course it had to be in My Top Ten. When I say "love," I mean it.

In honor of The Spy Who Shagged Me (in my dreeeeeams) I had to make it number 7 — 007, that is.

I reviewed my love of TWINE here, as you may recall. Since I've already blabbered on and on about my devotion to this shade, let's just enjoy some Daniel Craig pics, shall we?

Have any of you guys given The World Is Not enough a try yet?

P.S. Missed the first few? No prob.

OPI — The World Is Not Enough

I was so excited to get my paws on the new James Bond Skyfall Collection from OPI. Three colors were especially alluring, so I needed your help to narrow down which one I'd try first! GoldenEye, Casino Royal and The World Is Not Enough went head to head, and one emerged victorious. I am pleased to share The World Is Not Enough with you guys!

But first, let's look at a couple pictures of the star of Skyfall, the blondest Bond, the macho man, the hunk-a-hunk of burning homme that is... DANIEL CRAIG.

And now moving on to my review of The World Is Not Enough, or "TWINE."* First off, WOW. Not what I expected! It is called a "rosy pewter" by OPI, and, while I can see how those adjectives apply, they do not do this color justice.

TWINE is a chameleon color; it's pewter, it's plum, it's mushroom, it's graphite. It's filled with the tiniest specks of multi-colored microglitter; bits of mint and fuchsia, purple and silver. TWINE is gorgeous. It's already one of my favorite colors in my Stash.

Since I just put it on, I can't tell you how the formula wear, but I can tell you how it goes on. It's somewhat sheer, so the color is buildable. I put on three thin coats for MAXIMUM SPARKLEOCITY. Check out the photos below to experience TWINE.

So what do you guys think? I am so pleased with your choice!

xxo, Francesca

P.S. I leave you with 60 seconds of pure Daniel Craig.

OPI — My Private Jet (Holo)

I am sure you angels studied The Polish Addict's Lacquer Lexicon post religiously and can recite all the jargon by heart, right? ;) Of course.

So you know all about HTFs; "Hard To Find" colors that nail polish hunters search high and low for. We'll talk about the best way to go about tracking down HTFs at a later date. In the meantime, allow me to boastfully show you pictures of my current manicure.

Meet: OPI My Private Jet Holo. And this isn't just an HTF... it's actually regarded as a VHTF.

Let's talk about the murky history of OPI My Private Jet. MPJ was released in 2007 and quickly became adored for its deep, smoky, somewhat translucent base loaded with teeny, tiny holographic sparkles. Is it a sheer? Is it a jelly? Is it a glitter? It's hard to say what genre My Private Jet falls under... but it sure is easy to love.

And then, so help us all, OPI pulled what is basically one of the most perfect polishes in existence from the shelves. And that's fine, I guess. Maybe, for some bizarre reason, it was more expensive to produce than other shades... or maybe there was something sinister and toxic about it, something we'll never know... or maybe it was just too awesome and was cannibalizing the sales of their other colors and so, in a cold, calculating, utilitarian move, they killed it.

This is merely speculation. We will never know why OPI made this poor decision, but what we do know is this — OPI never actually killed My Private Jet. OPI replaced the original color with a similar (but hardly the same) shade and dared to keep the name "My Private Jet." As if we wouldn't notice. As if we couldn't tell.

You know what this is like? It's exactly like falling in love with a great girl who's popular and gorgeous and a really great student, whose favorite color is blue. And then she mysteriously vanishes, and you panic, fearing the worst. Accident... abduction... murder? And then she is found and you want to rejoice! Except something's just not right. She's not as... special. She's coarse. She's dull. She loves the color red, and you're like, "What the hell. This isn't like you. I know you said you're 'you,' but something's different. And your leg is missing. I am starting to believe that you're not really who you say you are."

And so now, true nail polish aficianados know that there are two* versions of My Private Jet floating around: The "Original" My Private Jet, to which we add the suffix "holo," and then The Imposter; a warm bronzey brown with small pewter pieces of microglitter. To be fair, I have never tried it, but my neighbor owns it, so maybe one of these weeks I'll get around to giving the less attractive twin a fair shot. (*I should note that rumors swirl of a THIRD version — or more! — but I have never seen one in real life. Here's a link if you want to learn more.)

Back to MPJ Holo. The formula is a dream. I've had mine for years and it applies just like the day it was opened. The sparkleocity we've got going on here is incredibly multifaceted. In dull fluorescent office environments, MPJ puts on a professional demeanor and her prism-like glitter tones down to a subtle shimmer. But take MPJ outside on your lunch break and HOT DAMN does she sparkle and shine. Mini rainbows on every nail.

This is one of those polishes that's a distraction while you drive because it just keeps twinkling at you, "Look at me, look at me!" And so you begin to turn your finger this way and that, watching the sunlit sparkles dance... and then the next thing you know, someone is giving you a finger of an entirely different kind.

Lovely in Lacquer has some gorgeous swatches of MPJ Holo that are simply fun to look at. Enjoy!

xxo, GLOSS

P.S. Thank you to Katia, who gave MPJ to me as a gift so many moons ago. <3

UPDATE, dated 07/19/12

I mentioned above that my neighbor had the newer MPJ. I took a picture of the bottom of my MPJ Holo bottle and she took a picture of her bottle. Observe.

Nubar — Violet Sparkle

There's something you should know about me.

I have a very Violet past.

Heh. As a part of my GLITTER Month (!) here’s a new glitter mani for you: Nubar Violet Sparkle.

I am just now getting into Nubar. It was hard for me to find Nubar here in Los Angeles since it doesn’t lurk in your local Sally’s, nor even the well-stocked Wilshire Beauty Supplies, but now that I know where to look, I’m hooked.  I’ve only tried out three Nubar shades — but I bought many more than that — so get ready to see a healthy amount of Nubar in the future!

I was pumped to try out Nubar, period, but there was one entire series that had me salivating. Of course I’m talking about Nubar’s Sparkles collection from Spring 2010. You MUST click on this link to check out swatches for the whole set from the wonderful Scrangie. (Scrangie, you are a priceless gem for painting such awesome swatches!)

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite color, but purple’s usually high on my list. Thus, Nubar Violet Sparkle was a have-to-have.

What’s really interesting about this color is that the base is clear! It’s not tinted, like China Glaze Ruby Pumps. Instead, Nubar relies on its high-quality microglitter to handle the coverage. I really wanted to show you how quickly the coverage builds, so I took some coat-by-coat shots.

As you can see, the finish is very, very gritty (and matte!)... but it didn't bother me. I slapped on a generous layer of Seche Vite top coat, and it smoothed things over. A little texture was still detectable, but it didn't drive me crazy and probably would have been less noticeable if I'd done only two coats.

Just before I took this off, I painted over it with a matte top coat and it looked awesome. Sorry I forgot to take a pic! But just letting you know that it's worth a try, or could be a great way to easily switch up your look mid-week.

Now let's match up these eye-catching Nubar Sparkle Collection colors with some of my favorite nail-loving ladies:

  • Bubbles Echo: Sky Sparkle (light turquoise-y blue) would be out of your comfort zone, but so fun for summer!
  • Kilo Whiskey aka KIM: Meadow Sparkle (light green) to match your eyez.
  • Lima Alpha: Hyacinth Sparkle (light lavender) since purple's your favorite, too.
  • MSB Chic: Petunia Sparkle (magenta-y) would look great with your wardrobe & coloring.
  • Whiskey Mike: Petunia Sparkle (magenta-y) since you and MSB don't even know each other, lol. It would look great on you, too! :)
  • VARNISH: Night Sparkle (deep deep blue) would be such a statement and match every outfit.

Has anyone else fallen in love with Nubar’s sparkles?

Xxo, GLOSS
