All Aboard!

Delving into the world of nail blogs can feel like a very long, very foreign adventure. I began my descent in 2007; it was around this time that I began to subscribe to my first nail polish brand newsletter. Whenever a new collection from Essie came out, I was one of the first (okay, few thousand) to know. One day, after seeing a particularly intriguing shade, I thought to myself, "I wonder what that would look like. In real life." But how was I to know? I suppose I could buy it — or try it — but I wanted to know immediately.

Google's a crucial player in nearly every aspect of my waking life, but when it comes specifically to my personal life, I have developed a pitiful habit. I like to ask Google questions as if it were a Magic 8 Ball.

And so, I asked Google, "What does Essie's 'Bags to Riches' look like in real life?" I wasn't surprised to see that Google trotted back to me in less than one second, carrying a million sources in its little robot mouth.  (My first and favorite search engine was Dogpile and I still like to say to Google, "Go fetch!")

Not only did I discover that Essie's Bags to Riches is pretty hideous, but I made a much more shocking discovery than that. What I found... were nail blogs. Actual blogs written all about nails! Nail shapes, nail colors, nail trends, nail art!

First, I felt comforted. There were others like me! Others who love the shine of a freshly-painted nail! Then, I felt threatened. These nail bloggers... they had so many followers. They posted so often, and posted so many colors! So many comments... Oh, GOD! Is nail polish a Thing now?

Well, yes. It was a Thing, it's been growing into a Bigger Thing, and I think it's fair to say that, as of 2012, it's a THING. A Huge THING.

It's tempting to feel that same Gollum-like jealousy that came over me when I heard that some of my favorite junior high reading material, L.J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries, was going to be made into a TV show. The idea of a million pleebs ruining my secret treasure was almost too much to bear.

Well, that's one way to look at it. I came to realize that sometimes, the more is truly the merrier. And I hope you think so too, because it's the only way Polishment can be justified. We know there are lots of other nail blogs out there, and we love them too. But not as much as we love you for stopping by. :)

Here at Polishment, we say, "Come one, come all, you nail polish lovers! Welcome, you nail art D-I-Yers! Jump on the bandwagon, because we're off on a great adventure and there's plenty of room for all!"

Glitter Gradient

The new trend is gradient. We have seen in here with Gloss' Ombre Unas- A Gray Gradient.  And here with my Ombre Rouge.  And here with my Sloppy Ombre.

This time, a gradient in glitter.

What is with this glitter crazy lately, you ask?  Well, I will answer that question with another question.  A scale question, no less.

On a scale of 1 to sparkles, how much do you love it when you nails glisten in the sunlight?

If you answered 1 to dull: please refer to the following trailer to begin your training in all things Glitter:

If you answered dull to shimmer: please refer to the following video for further education:

If you answered shimmer to blinding: Girl, you're a diva!  So watch this last video to graduate to Glamourdom and then continue to the following tutorial:

To start you will need Essie's Barefoot and Topless, Love & Beauty in Golden Girl, and Milani Nail Art in Art of Gold.

Cover nails in base coat.  Then two coats of Essie's Barefoot and Topless.  Let dry completely.

Then cover 3/4's of nail in one coat Love & Beauty in Golden Girl.  Let dry.

Then cover 1/4 of nail in gradient of Milani Nail Art in Art of Gold, applying it heaviest at tips.  Let dry.

Cover with top coat and marvel in the shimmer!

(On a cloudy morning and with a funky filer)

L'Ombre Rouge

Ombre, or 'to shade,' is all the rage these days! It's on the runway.

On the red carpet.

 On our nails.

And even in our hair.

Obviously, I am hooked on this ombre trend.  What can I say?!

Here is my little rendition of Ombre nails, which by the way, is a lot harder than it looks.  Although the shades of red may look great in the bottle, it is difficult to find the perfect the perfect crescendo of red.  Admittedly, I'm still working on it.

First, start with inspiration:

Then use a 3x5 card and play around with your reds to make sure they are similar in shade.

Then line your preferred bottles in order and get to work!

UPDATE: Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet — A Polish Trio Tribute

Oh, this is too funny... So you know how I was talking about Chanel's lackluster new collection yesterday?

And how I said it would have made a lot more sense if this collection — designed to play a supporting role for "Rouge Allure Velvet," Chanel's new matte lipstick — were matte, too?

The big disconnect for me is that this trio was released to "perfectly complement" Chanel's new line of Rouge Allure Velvet lipsticks, a matte twist on their popular Rouge Allure formula. So, it begs the question... why aren't these polishes matte, too?? That would have made such basic shades a lot more exciting, amirite?

Well well well. IMA GENIUS. Look what was in my inbox JUST THIS VERY MORNING! Check this out:

Not all matte top coats are created equal. Word on the street is that Essie's "Matte About You" is the best mattifying option this side of The Pond. I wonder how Chanel's new addition, "Beauté des Ongles" (French for "beautiful nails") compares? I'm considering just not even trying it, because what if I fall in love? It's Limited Edition!

Oh, Chanel. Up to your old tricks, I see.

Revlon — Matte Suede Emerald City

Revlon's Matte Suede in Emerald City speak to me in an number of ways.  First, I am from Seattle, so the Emerald City will always hold a special place in my heart.  Secondly, this nail polish is so pretty with it's deep shade of green and tiny flecks of lighter greens! Admittedly, it took me a very long time to get used to the idea of matte colors.  I mean, like many females, I tend to like things that are shiny and have sparkle.  However, matte is the newest fashion in nail colors and, with much hesitation and reservations about the absence of shine, I think I am starting to dig this trend!
